Make a calender of what happened in your school in 2010: get children to use drawings, entries, other means

Get your children together and recall with them all the interesting things that happened in your class and school in 2010: maybe the new hand-pump was installed, a reading corner began functioning, a favourite teacher left to join another school, a bird made a nest in the building, someone visited, tests were conducted, someone got injured, two people who were not on speaking terms began talking again, a hand-washing campaign took place, and a hundred other things happened.

Recall these and discuss the best ways to represent them on chart papers - with a bird's feather, a journal entry, a newspaper style report, a child's drawing, even a photograph. Use these and other ways to capture what happened in the months of 2010!  If you do make such a chart send me a photo to display in this blog.

Later (in 2011), of course, you can do so many more things with these charts...

Make jig-saws from leaves, old newspapers

  1. Take a leaf (preferably a recently fallen one). Tear into 5 pieces (or more). Ask a child (or a group) to put it together again. What age group would this be appropriate for?
  2. You can do the same with pictures in old newspapers, or even with news items that children are fond of reading (e.g. cricket scores).
  3. For still older children, you can use an old map (sometimes you get these in newspapers; otherwise, get it from a used geography exercise book).
  4. Don't forget to ask children how they piece things together, what they keep in mind as they look at the pieces.  Also ask them, what would make it very difficult to solve a jig-saw - then get them to make difficult ones for each other.
  5. Let me know what else you can do with / for / around jig-saws!

Get children to find family stories and do role plays on them

In every family there's a dozen or so favourite story about some relative or the other. Someone who got lost in a fair and was found, someone who poked a bamboo into a bee hive and got stung, someone who was forgetful... Ask children to find their favourite family stories involving relatives - by asking at home or even the neighbourhood.

The stories can be shared in so many ways - simply narrated, or written or made into drawings. Better still, get children to do role plays on these and write at least one of them down (for very young children, drawings should suffice).

Naturally, don't forget to include these in the children's profiles too. (And what can you do with them, perhaps, six months later?)

Get children to draw their family members, and include the drawings in their portfolios

Ask children to make drawings of their family members. Not just static drawings of someone simply standing around. Get them to talk about what people do - at home, at work, or during a celebration and so on. Then ask them to draw each family member. Young children love to draw and are not afraid to put pencil to paper - so it would be a good idea not to say things such as 'that is not a proper drawing'....

Children's drawings reveal the inner working of their minds. Ask them to talk about what they've drawn. Ask questions, get them to ask each other questions about the drawings. You might find out some very interesting things!

Don't forget to include some of these drawings in the children's portfolios. They reveal their world as well as the level at which they presently draw. A year later, you can ask them to draw their families again and note the difference.

What information do you need in order to profile your children?

X-mas break is a good time to start on child profiles. What information will you need? Don't just start writing anything and everything, or you'll end up creating too much work for yourself.

To decide what to include, ask yourself: 'what information will help me take better decisions, especially about classroom processes?' The socio-economic background, the language used at home, the family occupation, some of the key experiences a child has, specific strengths and areas that need attention - these are obviously of use.

If you have a child profile format that you'd like to share, do forward it and I'll put it up on the blog for others to see and use.

Are you sure you know each child well? Start keeping 'child profiles'!

It's difficult, isn't it, to know as well as to remember a hundred details about the 30 or so children in your class? Develop a small format to help you keep key details in one place. Later you can supplement this by maintaining files (or portfolios) for each child. It may seem like a lot of work in the beginning, but later on it will help you greatly. Believe me!
